The History of Yoga in Brighton project
This project aims to trace the history of yoga in Brighton and Hove through some of the main lineages in this city. We have chosen to look at Iyengar yoga, the Scaravelli-Inspired approach, Ashtanga and the Buddhist tradition of yoga. The intention is to capture the personal history, philosophy and connection to Brighton for each of these traditions. We want to collect this data through the personal stories of not only the teachers, but all the people involved along the way, providing multiple perspectives and voices. We have already recorded a talk at the 2017 Yoga Festival by Jenny Deadman about Iyengar in Brighton, and are recording a talk at the 2018 Festival about Derek Ireland and Ashtanga in the city.
During the first phase of activity (from July 2018 to December 2018), the team are aiming to raise awareness of the project and gather data through a series of interviews and a survey. We are also looking for volunteers to get involved in this exciting and unique project that aims to tell the story of yoga in the city for the very first time. If you have a story to tell or you would like to get involved in helping to develop this project, then please contact us.
